NYC National Parks Offer Glimpse of History
If you are thinking about vacationing within New York, planning ahead is the only way to go. Ellis Island is a great place to visit, although I believe I’ll show them the Statue of Liberty from far away rather than taking the ferry to it. Insights they may share with friends at their school as well (something other than the latest and greatest new DS game that is coming out soon).
A few of the essential parks I would love to take my children are: Federal Hall, in which George Washington was sworn in, Grant’s Tomb, Theodore Roosevelt’s Birthplace, and Castle Clinton, which was created for the purpose of keeping encroacher’s out. I would additionally like to take them to Saint Paul’s Church, although not for religious reasons, but for Religious freedom reasons. I think there’s an essential lesson to be taught there even now, maybe particularly now.
I think the lessons which may be taught about the past of our nation in New York City are just as important as the lessons that can studied in Washington or even Philadelphia. Our nation has come far on it’s path to democratic independence and we have fallen a couple of times on our way. There never would have been the Witch trials in Salem, the Civil War, or the Civil Rights Movement, although we have made it very far and still have a long way to go. I wish for my kids to learn the lessons of our past history and to look toward the future with anticipation.
I believe those are the examples that we could get from the state parks and these are much more valuable than the lessons we can learn in toy stores and throwing a Frisbee in Central Park. I want my children to visit museums and toy stores and witness different cultures, I additionally wish for them to return to their home with a good sense of the history of our special nation.
